Teaching for Global Community: Overcoming the Divide and Conquer Strategies of the Oppressor

The Third International Conference on Education, Labor, and Emancipation is pleased to announce a unique participatory opportunity for the academic community. Distinguished scholars from numerous fields will convene at the US/Mexico Border Region to compare theoretical perspectives, share pedagogical experiences, and develop strategies grounded in a commitment to social justice.
Education has long been viewed as a vehicle for building community. However, the critical role of education and schools for constructing community resistance is undermined by recent trends toward the centralization of educational policy-making (e.g. No Child Left Behind), the normalization of “globalization” as a vehicle for the advancement of economic neo-liberalism and social hegemony, and the commodification of schooling in the service of corporate capitalism. Alternative visions of schooling are urgently needed to transform these dangerous trends so as to reconstruct public education as an emancipatory social project.
This conference honors and re-examines Freirean principles and aim to take critical pedagogy in new directions for a new generation. The goal is to build upon past accomplishments of Paulo Freire’s work and critical pedagogy while moving beyond its historical limitations. This includes efforts that revisit and re-evaluate established topics in the field or take on new areas of contestation. Issues related to education, labor, and emancipation, broadly defined and from any geographical context, are addressed. The theoretical perspectives used to look at these issues might include, but are not limited to, the following:

Joel Spring is currently a Professor at Queens College of the City University of New York. His great-great-grandfather was the first Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory and his grandfather, Joel S. Spring, was a local district chief at the time Indian Territory became Oklahoma. Joel Spring worked as a railroad conductor on the Illinois Central Railroad and for many years lived each summer on an island off the coast of Sitka, Alaska. His novel, Alaskan Visions, includes many of his Alaskan experiences.
Professor Spring’s major research interests are history of education, multicultural education, Native American culture, the politics of education, global education, and human rights education. He is the author of over twenty scholarly books with the most recent being Pedagogies of Globalization: The Rise of the Educational Security State; How Educational Ideologies are Shaping Global Society; Education and the Rise of the Global Economy; and The Globalization and Educational Rights. His book Wheels in the Head: Educational Philosophies of Authority, Freedom, and Culture from Socrates to Human Rights has recently been translated into Chinese and published by the University of Peking Press.
Invited Guest Speakers
Presentation: “Critical Pedagogy: Where Are We Now”
Joe L. Kincheloe is the Canada Research Chair at the McGill University Faculty of Education. He is the author of numerous books and articles about pedagogy, education and social justice, racism, class bias, and sexism, issues of cognition and cultural context, and educational reform. Along with his partner, Shirley Steinberg, Kincheloe is an international speaker and lead singer/keyboard player of Tony and the Hegemones.
Shirley R. Steinberg is Associate Professor at the McGill University Faculty of Education. She is the author and editor of numerous books and articles and co-edits several book series. The founding editor of Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education, Steinberg has recently finished editing Teen Life in Europe, and with Priya Parmar and Birgit Richard The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Youth Culture, winner of a Library Journal award. She is the editor of Multi/Intercultural Conversations: A Reader. She is co-author of Changing Multiculturalism: New Times, New Curriculum, and Contextualizing Teaching (with Joe Kincheloe). Her areas of expertise and research are in critical media literacy, social drama, and youth studies.
Presentation “Repensando el Rol del Profesorado en las Sociedades Neoliberales de la Información y el Conocimiento”
Jurjo Torres Santomé is Professor of Education and School Organization in
the College of Education of the Universidad de A Coruña (Spain). He specializes
in sociopolitical analysis of curriculum, educational policy, antidiscrimination and
multicultural pedagogy, and teacher training. His books, widely read throughout
the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world, include hidden curriculum;
globalization and interdisciplinary: integrated curriculum; and early childhood
Presentation: “History of Black Brazilian Education and the Concept of Afrodescendence”
Henrique Cunha Jr., Professor of Education and Electrical Engineering at the Federal University of Ceara and Former Assistant Professor at the University of São Paulo USP. Founder Member and ex-president of the Brazilian Association of Black Researchers. Author of three books, Dr. Cunha is currently working with the construction of cultural centers in quilombo communities.
Presentation: “Imaging Guadalupe and the Quest to be Fully Human”
Nancy Pineda-Madrid is a faculty member in the Department of Theology on the Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry (IREPM) at Boston College. She works at the intersection of systematic theology and practical theology. She grew up in northern New Mexico and west Texas. She holds a Ph.D. in Systematic and Philosophical Theology from the Graduate Theological Union and an M. Div. from Seattle University.
Presentation: “Transnationalism, Bilingualism and Bilingual Education on the U. S.-Mexico Border Region”
Elena Izquierdo, Associate Professor, Bilingual/Linguistics/ESL Education, University of Texas at El Paso, and Vise President of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE). Her research and professional specializations focus on second language issues and biliteracy development. She was the principal of the nationally recognized Two Way Dual Language elementary school in Washington, D.C. As Director for Language Minority Affairs, she led the district into federal compliance in services to language minority communities.
Hermán S. García currently serves as Regents Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at NMSU. He is a nationally recognized critical bilingual educator and has authored and co-authored numerous articles, chapters, and books in critical bilingual education. Dr. García has traveled throughout Latin America and completed a teacher education program at the University of Southern Brazil (UNISUL, 1999-2002) in Tubarão, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Presentation: “Governance, educational labor, leadership and the matter of social justice: Some feminist observations”
Jill Blackmore is a Professor of Education in the Faculty of Education, Deakin University. She is on several editorial boards of international journals such as the British Educational Research Journal. Regional Editor of the International Journal of Leadership in Education, past President of the Australian Association of Research in Education and editor of the Australian Educational Researcher. She undertakes professional development with teachers, principals and parents as well as policy consultancies to government. Her research interests include feminist approaches to globalisation and education policy, administrative and organisational theory, educational leadership and reform, organisational change and innovation, teachers’ and academics’ work, and all their policy implications.
Presentation: “Juxtaposing Cultural Artifacts to Peel the Onion of Hegemony: Critical Pedagogy in the Classroom”
Robert Bahruth holds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics and Bilingual Education from The University of Texas at Austin. While at UT, he received the George I. Sanchez Endowed Presidential Scholarship for significant contributions to the field of minority education. He is professor of Bilingual Education at Boise State University where he has been honored with the “Outstanding Faculty Award 1997 -98” by the Associated Students of Boise State University. He has taught using critical pedagogy in Israel, Taiwan, Cuba, Guatemala, and Ecuador as well.
Presentation: “How can we teachers empower students to discover their full potencial and at the same time inspire them to set and achieve their goals using a critical pedagogy approach”.
Jeni Oliveira Neff is a teacher/researcher and activist in the area of critical pedagogy. During her 17 years as a teacher, she has taught various levels of elementary students as well as ESL (High School) for adults in Brazil. She studied with Ana maria Freire while attending a teacher preparation program in São Paulo and later completed a master’s Degree in Education at California State University at Fullerton. She was received the “Teacher of the Year” award in the Paramount Unified School District, California in 2002/2003.
Presentation: “Between Fate & Destination, Drifting & Traveling When Interrogating Globalization’s Fluidity—Critical Pedagogy in the Everyday”
Rudolfo Chávez Chávez is a Regent Professor within the Department of C & I at NMSU. He teaches curriculum theory, foundations, and critical multicultural education courses both graduate and undergraduate levels. His scholarship includes teacher education, critical theory & pedagogy, Neo-Marxist thought (in process), and critical race Lat/Crit theory within multicultural curriculum and border/post-colonial pedagogy.
Presentation: “Studying Youth Cultures: Some Reflections”
Doug Foley has been a professor of education and of anthropology at UT Austin since 1970. He specializes in race and ethnic relations, critical studies of schooling, and social movements in the American Southwest. His works include the influential ethnopraphies “Learning Capitalist Culture: Deep in the Heart of Tejas” and “The Heartland Chronicles.” He is the former co-editor of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education and present editor of the Anthropology and Education Quartely.
Presentation: “Three Thesis about Ideology: A Re-reading of The German Ideology around Discursive Mechanisms of Social Conformity and Power”
Miguel De La Torre Gamboa is Professor of graduate studies in the College of Philosophy and Letters of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (Monterrey), and researcher in Mexico’s National System of Investigation (SNI). His doctoral thesis, ““Los sistemas de valores en el discurso de cambio educativo y en la práctica de la gestión en educación superior en México” (“Values systems in the discourse of educational change and in administrative practice in Mexican higher education”), received the Medal of Academic Merit “Alfonso Caso.” He is also author of the bookDel Humanismo a la Competitividad (From Humanism to Competitiveness).
|A book (in English, with possible versions in Spanish and Portuguese) will be produced from this conference, comprising the most engaging conference papers, as selected by an editorial board. Presenters wishing to be considered for this volume should submit full papers (in APA style) for review by September 25, 2006.
All participants will also receive a CD including abstracts of presented papers.
